The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to making Tasmania a must-see visitor destination and keeping Tasmanian towns, beaches and towns clean is vital to that goal.

Today’s 2015 Keep Australian Beautiful Community Sustainability Awards are the perfect way to celebrate the achievements of our community champions, industries and schools.

On behalf of the Minister for the Environment Matthew Groom, it is encouraging to see Keep Australia Beautiful changing with the times to encourage people to think more broadly about sustainability rather than just anti-littering.

The Tasmanian Government has pledged its ongoing support to Keep Australia Beautiful with funding of $30,000 per year over the next three years in recognition of its important role in promoting a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

I would like to congratulate the winners of the 2015 KAB Awards, including Tasmanian Tidy Towns, Clean Beaches, Sustainable Cities, Youth and Citizen, and Sustainable Schools.

I am impressed by the efforts of all this year’s award winners, particularly the township of Triabunna, which won the 2015 Tidy Towns Award, as it has faced significant economic challenges over recent years and this win reflects its strong community spirit.

Also, to Glenorchy City Council, winner of the Sustainable Cities Award, for its range of sustainability programs and also to the Glenorchy Youth Task Force leader Yolanda Papi-Watson who has won the Youth Award.

Congratulations to the winners of the Clean Beaches Award, local Dover residents who rehabilitated the parkland behind Dover Beach with the support of the Huon Valley Council and to the five schools from across the State who won the Sustainable Schools awards, including Triabunna District School, Albuera St Primary, Geneva Christian College, Scotch Oakburn College and Penguin District School.

Finally, I congratulate Sue Smedley who won the Citizen Award for her outstanding individual contribution in promoting the history of Stanley.

These community members, industry groups and schools provide a leading light to others by helping to protect the natural assets of Tasmania for generations to come and providing a State that is a world-class visitor destination.
