Resources Minister Paul Harriss’ election promise to relocate Mineral Resources Tasmania to Burnie is in disarray.

“Mr Harriss is in complete denial over his dubious promise to forcibly relocate MRT,” Mr Green said.

“It has been revealed that 35 of MRT’s 42 staff will not be relocating.

“Mr Harriss is refusing to say what the future of these highly-skilled staff will be if they are placed on a public service redeployment list.

“What will the 35 geologists, geophysicists, environmental scientists and other highly specialised staff do if they’re not working at MRT?

“Mr Harriss also needs to come clean on what the relocation cost will be given it appears to be woefully underfunded.

“2000 Tasmanian mine workers have lost their jobs since Mr Harriss became Minister and he should be focussing his efforts on getting mining out of the doldrums not disrupting it further.

“Labor’s policy to pro-actively support the mining industry and to mobilise specialised MRT staff to get more on the ground support in the North-West and West Coasts is clearly a better way to go.”
