In another world first for Petuna, its salmon and ocean trout hatchery in Cressy (above) has earned Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification from the Global Aquaculture Alliance – a standard that only the world’s most sustainable salmon and ocean trout farms can attain.
Cressy is the world’s first multi-species hatchery to attain BAP certification and the official endorsement means Petuna now qualifies to offer three-star BAP Atlantic salmon and ocean trout.
Also BAP certified are Petuna’s Table Head and Liberty Point Atlantic salmon and ocean trout farm sites on Tasmania’s west coast and the Van Diemen Aquaculture processing plant, of which Petuna owns a majority share.
BAP is an international certification program based on science-based and continuously improved performance standards for the entire aquaculture supply chain — farms, hatcheries, processing plants and feed mills. It is based on independent audits that evaluate compliance with the BAP standards developed by the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA).
In granting Petuna’s latest BAP certification, GAA assessed every aspect of the hatchery’s operations, including its environmental responsibility, community relations, employee safety, food safety and fish health and welfare, to ensure it was a world-class organisation.
Petuna CEO Mark Porter said the organisation was extremely proud to become the world’s first aquaculture company to attain BAP for a multi-species hatchery.
“Environmental and social responsibility is key to our business and adding our hatchery to our already accredited marine farms demonstrates the continued hard work and dedication our team puts in across every aspect of our business,” Dr Porter said.
“With only 15 per cent of aquaculture ventures worldwide receiving third party accreditation, we are proud to have Petuna recognised for our sustainability work in both our fresh and salt water facilities.”
Petuna employs around 350 staff located in sites around Tasmania. The company was established 65 years ago by Peter and Una Rockliff, whose vision was for Tasmania to be internationally recognised for quality and unsurpassed environmental excellence.
It is now jointly owned by the Rockliff family and Sealord Group, which has brought with it a worldwide fishing, processing and marketing network. For further information on Petuna visit: www.petuna.com.au including more information on GAA’s BAP certification.
