“Saddened were the Hearts of Many Men’ seeks to capture Aboriginal history, both distant and recent, through images of Tasmanian Aboriginal men. The photographs, poignantly in black and white, give an impression of men of a proud people saddened but alive with resilience and determination. Yet there is almost a haunting atmosphere to the images: what lies behind the faces? From boxer Murray Mansell to singer Ronnie Summers, Ricky Maynard has captured the changing faces of Aboriginal men descended from tribal warriors who today cope with dignity in a white man’s world. He does them proud.”
