Labor Leader Bryan Green today slammed moves by the National Australia Bank to tighten its home lending criteria for a list of Tasmanian towns, including many on the West Coast.

“This is an appalling decision by NAB and Labor is calling on the bank to immediately reconsider its decision,” Mr Green said.

“Towns like Queenstown, Zeehan, Renison Bell and Rosebery are already doing it tough and this will make it even more difficult for people to come to live and work in these communities.

“The 30 per cent deposit NAB is requiring to buy property in these towns is totally unreasonable given banks normally ask for between 5 and 20 per cent.

“The State Government’s population policy failed to properly address the challenges facing the West Coast and other regional communities around Tasmania and this would be another significant blow.

“The Liberals have promised the world to people on the West Coast but to date have delivered very little.

“We need greater incentives not disincentives to support the future of communities like Strahan, Trial Harbour, Macquarie Heads and Kettering that also stand to be impacted by NAB’s decision.”
