UTAS VC office occupied …

A large crowd of over 100 people occupied the Vice Chancellor’s Office today.

“These people are here today to tell UTAS that it’s time for the university to show leadership on climate change and divest from fossil fuels.”

UTAS staff attempted to lock the doors and stop the protesters from entering, but were unsuccessful.

The protesters presented the Vice Chancellor’s staff with a banner containing the signatures of all those who are determined for UTAS to divest.

“We demand that the university live up to its reputation as a leader on climate change by divesting its $300 million investment portfolio from fossil fuels.”

“We estimate that of this $300 million, approximately $30 million is invested in the fossil fuel industry. By divesting, the university will send a powerful message that they are safeguarding future generations from the impacts of dangerous climate change.”

“It’s time for UTAS to live up to its rhetoric and divest from the fossil fuel industry.”

“The Divestment Movement in Australia recently had a huge success with Commonwealth Bank of Australia cutting ties with Indian mining company Adani.”
