The Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) has raised $750,000 to secure and protect The Big Punchbowl, a 240 hectare property on the east coast of Tasmania.
The Big Punchbowl, which is the TLC’s fourteenth private reserve in Tasmania, is home to the nationally-endangered Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), and conceals two magnificent white-bellied sea eagle (Haligeetus leucugaster) nests in its coastal bays.
It adjoins the Ramsar-listed Moulting Lagoon which is an important sanctuary for migratory, shore and sea birds.
“We are thrilled to be able to protect this very special habitat and we are so grateful to the many supporters that contributed to the purchase of this unique place,” said Jane Hutchinson, Chief Executive Officer of the Tasmanian Land Conservancy.
“The protection of The Big Punchbowl adds an important link to this chain of protected landscapes, surrounded by an internationally significant wetland and so close to the iconic Freycinet National Park,” Ms Hutchinson said.
Other threatened species include plants, such as native broom (Viminaria juncea), brooklime (Gratiola pubescens) and the rare endemic Tasmanian velvetbush (Lasiopetalum micranthum) scattered on the woodland floor.
The Tasmanian Land Conservancy is a not-for-profit organisation that raises money from the public to protect threatened species and unique landscapes in private reserves.
