Julia with Argentine bass Nahuel di Pierro in a scene form the last act of Don Giovanni, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden June 12

Last night (Friday) the audience at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, was treated to the debut of the glorious young Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva, who sang the soubrette role of Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

This was a pleasure Hobartians experienced a year ago when the diminutive soprano wowed a sold-out audience in Federation Concert Hall.

That unforgettable evening with the TSO won a Helpmann Award for the outstanding concert of the year.

Julia, now a major European star, recalls her visit to Tasmania with great affection. Over dinner after her debut she spoke of her visit to the Bonorong Wildlife Park and her remarkable reception by the local audience, five standing ovations during her performance, an event unmatched so far in her meteoric career.
