A proposed export barge operation at Waterloo Bay, on the Huon River, is being put forward by a private developer.
While Forestry Tasmania has been briefed, it is important to note this proposal was not on the list of options the State-owned company considered, along with TasPorts, for a new Southern wood fibre export facility as an alternative to Triabunna.
That assessment identified Macquarie Wharf in Hobart as the preferred site for further investigation, which was the Government’s decision.
It should also be noted that, as the development application states, “no export cargo has yet been secured” and further that it is an “assumption only that woodchips will be the cargo”.
That said, we are encouraged by business people in Tasmania who are prepared to back their ideas and help keep our economy growing.
We also support the principle that a development application should be considered on its merits, with fair assessment by the appropriate planning authority including opportunities for public consultation, and we are pleased to see this is exactly how the Huon Valley Council is proceeding.
The Government is well aware of the value and sensitivity of the aquaculture industry in the Huon, and would not contemplate any decisions that would impact adversely on salmon farms.
