Devonport Regional Gallery is offering a range of workshops and activities for all ages in paper-based jewellery making during November.

For adults, local Jeweller Melanie Honor Clarke will lead two evening workshops in paper-based jewellery making, particularly using recycled paper materials. You will learn how to cut, fold and shape paper into unique, contemporary and sophisticated pieces of jewellery ready to wear at the end of the workshop.

Clarke used the National Gallery of Australia’s Touring Exhibition BODYWORK Australian Jewellery 1970–2012 as inspiration for the workshop. Curated by Dr Robert Bell Am, Arts and Design at the National Gallery of Australia, this touring exhibition includes the work of 42 Australian jewellers. The juxtaposition of materials and recycling of objects imbues everyday materials with a poetic presence.

Visitors of all ages to the Gallery will also learn how to create their own paper beads using materials provided by the Gallery in the ‘Creative Nook’ – an interactive work space for visitors to engage in art making based on the particular exhibition.

School groups are invited to attend the Gallery, with BODYWORK being a great exhibition to see and explore contemporary Australian jewellery and discuss the connections between jewellery and body image.

View BODYWORK at the Devonport Regional Gallery between 8 November and 7 December, and contact the Gallery to book your place in these creative workshops (03) 6424 8296 or [email protected].
