STATE: The Inquiry is plunging Triabunna back into a state of grief. UPDATE …

Posted on

Hi Everyone,

Most of you will be aware of the Government Inquiry into the Spring Bay Mill and Government discussion re acquiring the site to continue wood chipping etc. An interim report is to be handed down on Tuesday.

Tom & I have sent in late submissions to the Inquiry as we were dismayed at the negativity in most submissions and the fact the Inquiry is plunging Triabunna back into a state of grief and destroying the sense of optimism Graeme Wood personally has given to the town by the commitment he has already shown to Triabunna.

Much work has already been undertaken at the site and many significant partnerships formed that include MONA, UTAS & the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. With the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, he initiated the “Triabunna Tomorrow” Project, funded a local school “garden”project and organised a magical musical event in the “Tin Shed” which was a sell out.

As novices in this world of social media we have now have set up a Facebook page in support of the Graeme Wood’s vision!!!

Many of you have already “liked” the page but as I rarely use facebook I am emailing you all to ask you to “like” the page, ask your friends to do the same, write to the press, talk on radio and lobby any politician you think has influence.

This is a critical moment in Tasmania’s history. Are we to move forward embracing change and a developer with vision, or sink back into the past?

If you would like more information on the vision Graeme Wood has for Triabunna & the future of Tasmania, have a look at the following links or get in touch with us personally.

ABC: Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman vows to avoid ‘exciting headlines’ The first Liberal Tasmanian government in 16 years will not be thrilling and will not generate exciting headlines, Premier Will Hodgman says. Mr Hodgman, delivering his first state council speech as Premier, received a long standing ovation as he walked to the podium to deliver his speech. “What an exciting time it is to be a Liberal,” Mr Hodgman said. “Isn’t it fantastic to be here together for the first time after our election victory in March of this year?” “It’s a special time to celebrate and to reflect on how far we’ve come,” he said.

Mercury: Parliamentary report against State Government compulsory acquisition of Triabunna chip mill site AN INTERIM Parliamentary report has found the State Government should not compulsorily acquire the former Triabunna mill site. The House of assembly Standing Committee on Community Development tabled an interim report this morning. The report recommends: THE State Government strongly welcome the Spring Bay Mill tourism proposal being spruiked by developer Graeme Wood. IT is preferable not to compulsorily acquire all or part of the former Triabunna mill site, but rather to investigate the location and viability of a new export facility in the region. etc, etc …

• Garry Stannus, in Comments: This interim report is an outrage against the principles which underpin our parliament, and thus, our democracy. Here we have a report that accepts (prejudical) hearsay as fact, declines to speak to Graeme Wood, the co-owner of the Spring Bay site and from its cowards’ castle issues a defamatory report, (a ’tissue of lies’ if ever there was one) which slanders Graeme Wood. This is the work of Guy Barnett, aided and abetted by Roger Jaensch and Mark Shelton, who – though not a member – was able to make his way onto this committee to assist in the farce that we have just seen occur. We have witnessed the spectacle of a malevolent chairman – Guy Barnett – who announced before the hearings had ended (indeed it was apparently just on the second day of the hearings) that the accused were guilty as charged. He hadn’t even then heard from Bryan Green, who was one of the responsible Ministers, at the time. Guy Barnett’s behaviour, as Chair, when Bryan Green gave evidence, was maladroit and inexcusable. This parody of an inquiry has been called a witch-hunt. It was that and more. Read the transcripts (you will find them at http://www.parliament.tas.gov.au/ctee/House/HAComDev.htm and while doing so, attend to Barnett’s disgraceful performance during the Public Hearing on Monday 22 September – Bryan Green.) It was a show trial. But what a farce!

Bertrand Cadart: Interim Report Triabunna Mill Inquiry The Glamorgan Spring Bay Council has been working closely with the developer Mr Graeme Wood since he first commenced plans to develop the site and we whole heartedly welcome the recommendation that the State Government likewise begins to help facilitate the proposed tourism development.” Spring Bay Mill will be rejuvenated into a tourism hub and multi-purpose destination to unlock greater tourism potential in the area, providing employment, education and cultural benefits to the region. The Spring Bay Mill is in an ideal location on the headland of Spring Bay at Triabunna. It is surrounded by rural grazing land, with spectacular views of Maria Island, Orford and Triabunna. I believe the Spring Bay Mill development will be the catalyst for a complete transformation of the Spring Bay area over the next 5-10 years into a prime tourism and marine recreational hub for visitors and locals. The East Coast has the potential to become Tasmania’s tourism mecca and the Spring Bay Mill is completely in line with Glamorgan Spring Bay Council’s vision for the area. It has been clear before and throughout this inquiry that as a whole the community is very much in favour of the development …
