The kegs have been tapped at Hobart’s inaugural Oktoberfest at Princes Wharf No. 1, signalling the start of the two day event.
Inspired by the original Oktoberfest held in Munich, the celebration of German culture is expected to attract up to 14,000 people.
Authentic German food and beers will be available, as well as traditional music and entertainment and opportunities to learn about the Bavarian culture and history.
Activities at Hobart’s Oktoberfest include Stein lifting, the Beardmeister competition, strong woman battles, and cow milking.
16, 000 litres of beverages have been imported from Germany for the event, all adhering to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1487, which states that beers can only feature four ingredients – hops, barley malt, yeast and water.
Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, Schnitzels and Pretzels are some of the German food favourites on offer.
Oktoberfest continues until midnight tomorrow (Saturday, 11 October).
