Cassy O’Connor MP, Greens member for Denison, today launched Alderman Helen Burnet as a Greens candidate for Lord Mayor of Hobart City Council today.
The launch, at Collins Court’s Pop up Patch was a chance for Alderman Burnet to share her vision for Hobart over the next term and beyond.
“It’s my great opportunity to run as Lord Mayor, and if I’m elected in October by the people of Hobart, I look forward to making sure that Council is run a lot more effectively than it has been over the last three years,” said Alderman Burnet.
“I think it’s really important that council is a collaborative organisation; a group of people that works together really effectively. I wish to provide the opportunity for Council to go forward as a leadership body.”
“We can do so much more for the city of Hobart. We can activate shop fronts which are empty at the moment and bring the vibrancy and difference that Hobart requires. We have the capacity to be collaborative and to connect the community.”
Alderman Burnet pointed to the Elizabeth Street Bus Mall as an example of a space ripe for rejuvenation. “Hobart’s bus mall should be a jewel in our crown, it should be a transport hub. For too long Council has spent millions of dollars propping up car parks. It’s now time to spend just a fraction of that money to make our urban transport hub work more effectively and I’d really like to see that in my term if I’m elected as Lord Mayor.”
Hobart’s Local Government election, conducted by postal vote, will run from October 14-28.
