The Liberal government needs to face up to the challenge of offering a positive and constructive legislative agenda for the remaining parliamentary sitting weeks this year, given their current track record has been divisive and driven by revenge, Greens Leader Kim Booth MP said today.

“The Premier, Will Hodgman, stated over the weekend that his government is going to be one of getting things done, but he needs to learn that it is easier to achieve outcomes by working with people, rather than just arrogantly trying to ram decisions through,” Mr Booth said.

“Tasmania needs to see a constructive legislative agenda from the Hodgman regime, and Anti-Poverty week should prompt a concerted effort from the Liberals to work with all parties to address the shocking fact that 15.1 per cent of Tasmanians are at risk of poverty.”

“The Greens recognise there is no easy one solution to addressing poverty, and it needs to be tackled from a variety of directions from all sectors.”

“Our proposed state taxation review to examine whether the current levers are fostering a more equitable society or entrenching inequality, is something tangible that the government can act on now.”
“We need to tackle structural reform of the state’s finances both in the immediate and long-term if we are genuine about breaking the poverty cycle.”

“Currently there are only three Bills waiting to be dealt with by the Assembly, now the Treasurer has pulled his fatally flawed public sector wage freeze Bill, so we would be expecting a hefty amount of legislation to be tabled this week.”

“The current light legislative workload gives the Premier the opportunity to table constructive legislation that unifies rather than divides the community.”

“If the government has run out of steam already then the Greens have plenty of issues we will be pursuing this week including a guarantee Hare-Clark will not be demolished under this government, the public sector wage freeze negotiations, medicinal cannabis, the Triabunna Mill fiasco, the attack on the Integrity Commission, and gun law reform, amongst others,” Mr Booth said.
