Labor Leader Bryan Green said today the Department of State Growth will be gutted with one in four people to lose their job.

“How this department will function effectively now is anyone’s guess,” Mr Green said.

“It is clear there is no champion for State growth, it’s certainly not the responsible Minister Matthew Groom, who has allowed Peter Gutwein to rip the guts out of his department.

“The great irony is that the new mega department was established by the Government to drive investment and create jobs.

Mr Green said the true extent of cuts to the Department of State Growth was still unkown.

“The Government won’t say how many more people, particularly those on fixed-term contracts, will be forced to leave.

“The Government is systematically getting rid of people without any thought about how departments will be able to function in the future.

Mr Green questioned plans to appoint a highly paid Co-ordinator General and the setting up of a new Infrastructure Tasmania office within the Department of State Growth.

“This is an appalling double standard at a time when the Government says we need fewer bureaucrats not more.”
