The Shadow Minister for Education, Michelle O’Byrne, says Tasmanian schools cannot weather 266 job cuts without affecting the lives of students.

“Today’s announcement makes a lie of the Liberal Government’s promise to not slash frontline services,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Will Hodgman was elected on a promise to increase spending on education and now he’s slashing jobs.

“Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff must explain what these job cuts will mean for Tasmanian students.

“You simply cannot remove this amount of employees in eight months without disrupting education.

“The Treasurer’s contribution to Parliament today was totally devoid of empathy for the people his callous cuts will affect.

“The Liberal Government should not be taking the axe to schools to pay for its $400 million worth of extravagant promises.

“Its inability to negotiate an outcome with its own workforce is ultimately going to hurt Tasmanian students.”
