Serious Consideration should be given in establishing a Tram museum and historic Tram Depot in the proposed redevelopment of the rail yards.
The City of Hobart has a number of refurbished historic Trams which can be on permanent display with the History of the Hobart tramway as part of the site.
Establishing a depot and museum would be the catalyst in developing a regular weekend historic tram service on the now disused rail line.
The service could operate regular trips to the botanical gardens, the Train Museum in Glenorchy Connection to Cadbury and Mona.
With thought a number of passing lanes could be implemented at appropriate points along the rail line.
This could also link the waterfront to these establishments along the route with a stop somewhere near the IXL buildings or opposite the Grand chancellor which would not create issues with the fishing industry.
The Tramway was a project and dream of the late Alderman Darlene Haigh which I worked closely with and now is the time to consider a permanent site for these historic Trams to be located in this prescient and whilst consideration is happening on what could be established on the site.
This is a suitable project for the area which will have a two pronged benefits in a historical Tram depot and Museum and another Tourist link from the water front to the Northern suburbs
The HCC could seek Federal funding for a project of this nature considering that Hobart was the first city to have an electric Tramway and double decker trams in Australia.
I will be seeking that the HCC write to Chairman of the Macquarie Point Development Corporation Mr. Mark Ryan for the corporation to seriously consider this type of project for this site
This is a realistic proposal that did not proceed in the past for political reasons but is far too important for the City not to be given appropriate consideration as it will not affect the waterfront as proposed.
