Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff must categorically rule out a reduction in frontline teachers and teaching assistants as the Government cuts more than 1000 public servants.
Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne today asked Mr Rocklifff why Tasmanian teachers had been canvassed to take voluntary redundancies.
“Jeremy Rockliff must absolutely rule reducing teacher numbers as he slashes the education budget,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“The Liberals’ Budget gives with one hand but takes with another.
“Budget papers show $148 million will be clawed back from education by the Liberals.
“Yet again the Liberals say one thing – that they’ll protect frontline services – but do another.
“Teachers’ salaries are already being cut by this government – now Mr Rockliff wants to sack them.
“That would be a broken promise.”
