The Premier Will Hodgman is backing away from the Liberals’ unequivocal election promise to cut Spirit of Tasmania fares by 20 per cent.
“Mr Hodgman is less than enthusiastic about delivering on the promise and today admitted the 20 per cent reduction in fares might not happen,” Shadow Tourism Minister Scott Bacon said.
“When the Liberals announced the promise they said fares would be cut by 20 per cent.
“During questioning in Budget Estimates, Mr Hodgman said it was his expectation fares could be reduced by up to 20 per cent at some time in the future.
“This is fast shaping as another broken election promise from the Liberals.
“Mr Hodgman admitted the Government is no closer to cutting fares on the Spirits six months after coming in office.
“All that has happened is a request to TT Line for a business case based on a 20 per fare reduction.
“Mr Hodgman also admitted he hasn’t even spoken to TT Line.
“The issue is that the Liberals led people to believe fares would be reduced immediately, knowing it was impossible.”
