… community building & opportunities for Glenorchy
Greens’ endorsed candidate for Glenorchy Alan Whykes said he was looking forward to the local government election campaign with a plan to get back to basics. Alan Whykes said he would push for efficiencies within Council operations and also lobby to improve employment and educational opportunities in the area.
“Councillors need to ensure that ratepayers get very good value for money,” Mr Whykes said.
“We should be aiming for Glenorchy to be synonymous with excellence, and that applies to everything we do. We need to build communities that are financially, socially and physically healthy. As we do that we make Glenorchy a great place to live, work, study, retire or simply visit.”
Mr Whykes said he foresees an opportunity to encourage small- and medium-sized businesses to relocate to Glenorchy. “There are plenty of commercial, retail and industrial premises that are pretty much ready to go. The council has an essential role in marketing the benefits of doing business within the municipality.”
Mr Whykes is also interested in developing a food plan for the municipality to develop a culture of healthier eating and stimulate employment in food-related industries.
“We have a good base, but there is also a need for upskilling in areas like packaging, marketing and food business management. And we definitely need a good farmers’ market to become a focal point for food activities in the northern suburbs.”
Alan Whykes has recently written to the state government suggesting that they bid to host the next World Food Travel Association summit, to be held in 2019.
“The World Food Travel Association summit is a major international conference and would seem to be an ideal fit for Tasmania’s ambitions to develop food-related tourism,” he said. “And between MONA, Derwent Entertainment Centre, GASP and other local facilities, I believe prime consideration should be given to locating the event in Glenorchy,” Mr Whykes said
Bio note: Alan Whykes is the proprietor of Otis Beanery, a food education business focussing on vegan and ethnic cuisine. He is a qualified interpreter with three languages and has also worked in public service and community arts.
