The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) welcomes the trial of a new biosecurity measure on the Spirit of Tasmania ships in which vehicles will be inspected upon embarkation in Melbourne rather than disembarkation at Devonport.
“We understand people’s frustration at the delays leaving the terminal at East Devonport,” TFGA chief executive Jan Davis said today.
“The value of agricultural production in Tasmania is more than $1.2 billion. The food and fibre industry and its multipliers account for 20 per cent of gross state product. That cannot be jeopardised by lax biosecurity across Bass Strait.
“Tasmania’s biosecurity must remain the paramount consideration. Stopping potential pests and diseases from getting to Tasmania is far more effective than trying to deal with problems after they’ve landed on our doorstep,” Ms Davis said.
However, she stressed that it is important that the aim here is to improve service and outcomes, not to cut cost and local resources.
