Long standing alderman Jeff Briscoe today announced he would be a candidate for the positions of Deputy Lord Mayor and alderman. In recent weeks there was some speculation in the media that he would be a Lord Mayor candidate.
“After extensive discussion with my family, friends, colleagues and supporters I have decided that the best way for me to serve the people of Hobart is to put my hand up for the Deputy Lord Mayor position.”
“There is a very good chance that the residents will elect the second only female Lord Mayor of Hobart and I will be privileged to serve with either of the declared candidates (Aldermen Sue Hickey and Helen Burnet)
“We need more female representation in leadership positions in local government especially at a time where there is little female representatives in top positions in the State and Federal Governments.”
“Residents know me as a fearless protector of following the right process for development, the environment and as an innovator to ensure more open government whilst maintaining resident’s amenity “
“Local government is more than rates, roads and rubbish but we cannot ignore that that it’s primary role is to ensure a clean well functioning city that gives best value for the ratepayer.”
“Whilst various vested interests have tried over the years to ‘rein” me in, I remain a strong and fearless advocate for transparent and open decision making and that includes full disclosure of election donations and subsidies to business.
“I am looking forward to the campaign, as I sure it will be a fascinating election, with numerous candidates where under the new rules, anyone can stand for the leadership positions.“
