The decision by the Administrator of Norfolk Island to cancel a licence for Tasman Health Cannabinoids to import, grow and export cannabis shows this is a complex and serious issue which cannot be rushed.
Administrator Gary Hardgrave has echoed the Liberal Government’s concerns around the legal provision for growing or using medicinal cannabis in any Australian jurisdiction by noting in his decision;
“The Australian Government has a range of obligations under international law regarding the cultivation and trade of illicit drugs. The licence issued to Tascann may not adequately address these obligations and it was issued without consulting the relevant federal authorities.”
The Liberal Government rejected a proposal from Tasman Health Cannabinoids in Tasmania because it did not adequately address issues surround safety, security and the potential for social harm.
The regulation and approval of medicines occurs at a federal level through the Therapeutic Goods Administration. This framework is established by State and Commonwealth legislation and is designed to provide all of us with safe and effective medications. The TGA standard is the standard of Governments across the country.
The Legislative Council has set up a committee to investigate this issue and we believe that is the appropriate course of action because of the complexities.
We look forward to the committee’s recommendations which will be responded to.
Michael Ferguson, Minister for Health
