The Liberal Government is a strong supporter of the arts in Tasmania.

Our arts, cultural and creative sectors are amongst Tasmania’s competitive strengths, contributing to our vibrant community, supporting tourism and economic development, and inspiring our island state.

This year the Tasmanian Government Art Site Scheme is celebrating its 35th year. The Art Site Scheme is Tasmania’s public art program, which supports and manages the commissioning of artworks for public buildings and spaces.

To mark the 35th anniversary an exhibition of works commissioned through the scheme is running in Hobart through August.

The Art Site Scheme began as an initiative of the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board in 1979 and was the first public art program of its kind in Australia.

By commissioning Tasmanian artists, the scheme supports the Tasmanian economy and provides significant jobs for Tasmanian artists.

Many of the artworks commissioned through the public art scheme are functional elements of a building, such as tables or seating.

The scheme has commissioned in excess of 1,200 artworks located in over 340 sites across the state. The artworks form the State Government Public Art Collection, an asset owned by the people of Tasmania.

The scheme exhibition will showcase the creativity and imagination of some of the artists and artworks commissioned over the last 35 years.

Scheme is open at 146 ArtSpace, 146 Elizabeth Street Hobart from July 31 – August 28.
