The Liberal Government has a long-term plan to rebuild Tasmania’s frontline services, such as police.
We want Tasmania Police to be recognised as Australia’s leading law enforcement service, and we are committed to ensuring our police have first-class facilities.
In January last year, the Dunalley Police Station was quite literally on the frontline as a bushfire devastated the community.
Like so much of the town, the station and a residence were destroyed.
Work has now begun on a new police station to serve Dunalley and communities across the Tasman Peninsula.
Today, it was my pleasure to visit the town with Assistant Commissioner Donna Adams to see the new station and a new residence start to take shape.
Both are being built by the Tasmanian-owned company Wilson Homes and are expected to be finished in late September.
A second residence, which sustained heat and smoke damage in the fires, has already been repaired.
The two police residences allow the two constables based at Dunalley to live in the local community, which ensures that they can build stronger community relationships and also respond at all times to emergencies.
When completed, the new station will provide a first-class facility for police, while showing that a community so devastated by fire is getting back on its feet.
