The repeal of the Carbon Tax is the politically expedient political mantra of the Liberal Party as headed by Prime Minister Tony Abbott to whom, “Climate Change is Crap”.
The mantra of the repeal of the Carbon Tax ensuredhis election … as the electricity and gas utilities piled in the election funds to elect the Liberals – out of pure self interest.
The Palmer amendment has sunk the utilities ship as they can no longer scam the unknown figure that comprises the majority of the Carbon Tax rebate while not paying the tax.
As the idiotic (Environment Minister) Greg Hunt and (Senator Eric, Leader of the Government in the Senate) Abetz agree to any fatuous Palmer amendment in order to get a good and sensible tax repealed, they will stuff the system big time.
The Utilities cannot afford to refund $11 million a day to consumers – that’s $4 billion a year off their bottom line – nor can they administer a full uncontestable rebate.
Even if they do not pay in full, 160 of them can expect a class action from the lawyers that will prove to be the largest in Australian history.
In fact they can probably expect one whatever they pay.
The rewards from a class action in this tricky area will be enormous.
The fine is another $10 billion should the utilities be tempted to just ignore the repayments altogether.
How does this proposed legislation affect our clean and green electricity producer Hydro Tasmania?
It is currently a receiver of Carbon Tax largesse. This will immediately vanish from Hydro Tasmania’s bottom line. The size of the figure varies from a minimum of $70 million to a maximum of $200 million. It is a politically well-guarded secret.
This money will be lost to Hydro who to stay solvent will have to raise electricity prices as its rewards from the Carbon Tax are lost.
Further it will make the gas-powered power station at Bell Bay totally worthless as any electricity produced will be subject to payout of the missing Carbon Tax.
The 12 Senators from Tasmania are charged with defending Tasmania and its interests in the Senate.
The repeal of the Carbon Tax is not in this state’s interest for it will increase our electricity prices and further impoverish its people.
