Australian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson made the following statement after Finance Minister Cormann’s response to his question today in Senate question time:

“It is clear from Minister Cormann’s response to my questions today that the Government is not interested in a Royal Commission.”

“A Senate inquiry recommendation for a Royal Commission into Commonwealth Bank (CBA) was agreed to by Green, Labor and Nationals members of the Economics references committee.

“Disturbingly Senator Cormann also stated that the CBA’s response was a positive step forward – this is despite the problems outlined in the Senate inquiry report which are yet to be addressed in any substantial way by CBA.

“The Commonwealth Bank response on Thursday last week was extremely disappointing, with the Bank still unwilling to allow an independent review of customer files.

“The Abbott Government should be keeping up the pressure on the bank not praising these initial efforts,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.
