Councils: they will have no reason to exist

Posted on

I understand that the Meander Valley Council is considering letting its Interim Planning Scheme fall by the wayside after some 13 years of considered effort.

Is this is a result of the newly elected State Liberal government’s wish to centralise planning using the expressed aim of removing red and green tape?

It may be suggested that the real reason is that graft can then removed from local councils to State pollies who have been missing out on the rivers of gold that planning provides to those who are prepared to corrupt the system.

I used to live in NSW where evidence of the proceeds from the corruption of the system by the transfer of planning powers from local councils to state pollies is now all pervading and the resulting stench is rapidly becoming common knowledge.

Tasmania is never one to be left behind in such matters.

The mass exodus of mayors into the Tasmanian parliament may be indicative of this change of thinking.

The loss of power over planning when combined with now lost control over water and sewerage means that local councils may as well close their doors for they will have no reason to exist.
