Dark Mofo is proving to be a very bright light on Tasmania’s winter events calendar.
Tasmanians are embracing the solstice festival’s unique offerings with more than 39,000 tickets snapped up and many events selling out.
Importantly more than one in three tickets were bought by interstate visitors, creating the perfect opportunity to rewrite the country’s attitude to winter in its most southern state.
Drawing tens of thousands of people out of hibernation in the traditionally quieter winter time was also a major boon for surrounding businesses, with about $20 million injected into the economy.
I congratulate David Walsh and his team for bringing this event to life for a second time and look forward to their offerings at next year’s festival.
The Liberal Government is proud to support the event with $1 million in funding provided to the organiser MONA through Events Tasmania.
It is events like Dark Mofo that will help the Government achieve our target to grow the tourism industry to 1.5 million visitors per year by 2020.
