The Liberal Government is committed to delivering lower power prices for Tasmanian households and business.
It is great news today that electricity prices will drop by 7.80 per cent from July 1 2014.
For a typical household, this is a saving of around $164 on their annual electricity bill. For small business customers, this is a saving of around $136 on their annual bill.
This saving is primarily due to the Federal Government’s decision to abolish the carbon tax from July 1 2014, which will see a reduction in Aurora Energy’s costs of buying electricity.
The Liberals have long maintained Tasmanians were unfairly hurt by the carbon tax despite the state’s large renewable energy base.
This tax unfairly impacted households and business and many Tasmanians were left rightly asking why they were paying for carbon on their bills when the electricity they use is generated by carbon free hydro dams and wind farms.
If Bryan Green had his way and the carbon tax remained, Tasmanians would see no reduction in power bills.
Under Labor and the Greens power prices rose by 75 per cent in 6 years and they left Tasmanians struggling to pay their bills.
Under this Government, we will make double digit power price increases year on year a thing of the past.
We are committed to delivering some of the most competitive power prices in the country which will not only attract investment and drive business, but ease the cost of living pressures on Tasmanian households.
Will Hodgman, Premier
