Launceston resident and Greens Senator for Tasmania, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson offers the following comment on the International and Domestic cricket scheduling for the 2014-15 Summer.

“It is positive to see Tasmania receive one one-day international and 3 World Cup matches. Given two of these will involve Australia I expect Tasmania will put on a great show for these events.

“It is however disappointing that there is again no Test match scheduled for Tasmania. Bellerive hosted Tests in 2010, 2011 and 2012. We don’t really want a Test match free summer for Tasmania to become the norm.

“What is more disappointing is that no International or First-Class domestic games are scheduled for Launceston.

“There is a strong desire in Launceston to see high quality cricket and international games would really help build our sporting tourism economy.

“Cricket Australia needs to seriously look at bringing some games to Launceston. High-quality night cricket would be a great spectacle at Aurora Stadium.

“Nearly 18,000 people turned out for the Rick Ponting Testimonial game at Aurora. We have proved we can draw the crowds.

“The women’s cricket schedule is yet to be released. I hope that Launceston games figure prominently on this fixture.

“Cricket Australia should be upfront with Launceston so we know what our city needs to do to attract international and first-class cricket,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.
