“New research suggesting a link between pornography and smaller brains is one more reason why we need ISP filters to block harmful sites,” FamilyVoice Australia Victoria state officer Peter Stevens said today.
Opponents of ISP filtering claim that:
• ISP filtering can’t be done;
• or if it can be done, it can’t be done perfectly and would slow down the internet;
• it is parents’ responsibility to stop children viewing harmful material.
“These objections are invalid,” Pastor Stevens said. “Each year we see new and better filters being developed – and while the latest versions are not perfect, they are greatly improved. In the UK, internet service providers are now required to provide filters with ‘on’ as the default. All new mobile phones are also expected to have porn filters.
“I hear from so many couples whose marriages have been damaged by pornography addiction,” Pastor Stevens said. “Worse, children as young as six are being exposed to hardcore porn on smart phones in the school yard, and are copying what they see on other young victims!
“Parents cannot control what other students show their children. The federal government has ultimate responsibility for the internet. There is no reason why Australia cannot follow the UK’s example.
“Surely our children are worth it!”
