More woe for mining … but we’ll keep backing multinationals …

Plans to restart Tasmania’s Mount Lyell copper mine from the end of July are in disarray after a rockfall in its ventilation system.

The owner, Copper Mines of Tasmania, said it would take up to three months to clear the ventilation drive and re-route the mine’s main high-voltage power supply.

Copper Mines of Tasmania’s general manager Scot Clyde said in a statement the rockfall had not put employees at risk but significant repairs and clearing lay ahead.

Some 500 metres of the key exhaust airway is believed to be damaged and an 800-metre re-routing of the main power supply would be needed.

“This work can only be done when the mine is not operating and preliminary estimates are that this may take some two to three months,” Mr Clyde said.
