I recently caught up again with Melbourne musician, the delightful storyteller, troubadour, (as she likes to be known), Shelley Segal. Shelley says her time visiting Tasmania last year accompanied by fellow musician Adam Levy was ‘so amazing’ and that she had ‘a blast’ the visit included a gig at MONA.
Shelley’s has been touring around the US and Europe for a couple of years now and says the US with it’s huge population has made that touring quite extensive, however now Shelley is planning to focus more on touring in Australia and this comes at a time when Shelley is getting some strong media coverage both overseas and back home.
Recently, Shelley’s had some controversy with her new single ‘Morocco’ from the album, ‘An Easy Escape’. Ironically its been no easy escape from controversy for Shelley, with much of the controversy misconstrued and unwarranted, informed by a media article rather than critics and fans. Shelley is certainly not denouncing Morocco with her the lyrics of her single lyrics and instead tells me of how much she loved Morocco and enjoyed her time there.
There has been a positive reaction from the controversy with many people accessing the song and loving it, in fact the song has had over 40.000 views thus far and newspapers such as The Age, and Sydney Morning Herald have run features on Shelley.
As you may remember from the last time I spoke to Shelley, she grew up in a Jewish home into a musical family. Her dad being the president of the synagogue meant that she was included in musical celebrations. With her own beliefs being more humanist than religious Shelley maintains an open mind and respect for other peoples beliefs and honoured those beliefs and traditions by singing in the various celebrations at her father’s synagogue.
The name Shelley means Meadows and meadows are defined ‘as open sunny areas that attract and support life that couldn’t thrive in other areas.’ Shelley, true to the name is a delightful young lady that with her sunny disposition and openness to talk about her beliefs and many other issues allows debate and lively discussion to thrive
