Today’s announcement that the Mt Lyell mine will reopen is very good news for Queenstown, the West Coast and the mining industry.
Mt Lyell is our oldest and still one of our most significant mines.
It is unfortunate that the reopening will not secure employment for the full Mt Lyell workforce.
However, the Government acknowledges the efforts by Copper Mines of Tasmania to support the workforce through the shutdown and its commitment to the investment required to establish a safe mining operation and prove up long-term ore reserves for the future.
The Liberal Government is working with CMT on a range of matters where Government assistance may be required.
This is in addition to the $400,000 provided by the Government to assist the West Coast Council help miners affected by the shutdown.
