Fostering Fred-ship

Posted on

The name Fred has a variety of meanings including ‘sage wise’ and ‘peaceful ruler’. All of these might describe Fred Smith, he has a great wisdom and although not a ruler himself, as a diplomat has worked hard to facilitate peaceful rule. Fred Smith also has an alternative profession as a musician informed by that same work as a diplomat. I spoke to Fred recently, for the first time, he correctly tells me, since our chat in 2011, His upcoming visit will see him once again accompanied by musical partner Liz Frenchman in performances around the state.

Fred regularly gets to Tasmania, in fact he attempts to get here at least once a year and was most recently in Devonport last November. He loves Tasmania saying its appeal is that it is ‘beautiful’ and of course for its ‘people’. In ‘a complex world’ Fred is impressed by Tasmanians concern and interest in his work.

The subject matter of the show Fred is bringing to Hobart focuses on music inspired by his diplomacy work ,particularly in Afghanistan.

From Bougainville, where Fred was part of the peace keeping force to being the first Australian diplomat that was posted in southern Afghanistan to help build relationships with tribal leaders about the work of the coalition. From these experiences Fred has a wealth of knowledge to impart.

Once again Fred will be telling stories and showing photos, some by friends, of his recent time in Afghanistan. Liz Frenchman, the perfect female voice he long searched for, will sing songs from the viewpoint of Afghani Women.

On his recent trip which was marking the end of Australia’s mission in the country and for Fred himself, a coming full circle of his involvement there. Fred continues to be positive on what had been happening in the country, noting the successful elections which included the participation of women and increased women attending school, albeit still at a low base.

On this tour Fred will sing tracks from ‘Dust of Uruzgan’ as well as new songs reflecting on Afghanistan now.

Fred with Frenchman will be performing at:
