World Heritage Forests In Danger

Almost 2000 people have rallied today in the Upper Florentine Valley to defend World Heritage listed forests.

The Bob Brown Foundation’s Campaign Manager Jenny Weber said: “Today’s outstanding turn out in the Upper Florentine forests clearly shows that Australians are very proud of their World Heritage forests.

:We are sending a strong message to UNESCO that we love our spectacular forests of outstanding universal value, and the Australian community will stand up to defend them.”

“The Australian community strongly opposes the government’s proposal to the World Heritage Committee to remove 74 000 hectares of World Heritage listed forests from the Tasmanian World Heritage Area,” Jenny Weber said.

• O’Brien, in Comments: Well, ‘World Heritage is Forever’ forever is a long time and nothing lasts forever. To get some idea of just how insidious & twisted is Tasmania’s filthy woodchipping/profit agenda we need not look far. I was in the soon to be closed (?) UTAS Science library thumbing through some tomes & came accross a circa 2000? FT funded paper. It made for some incredible reading. The candidate/writer found that not only was it not detrimental to a particular species of possum to clearfell & woodchip it’s habitat, it was actually beneficial. The pushed up winrows of remannt forest provide a boon in nesting sites you see. All those trees only provide limiting nesting sites, when clearfelled the possums have far more nesting sites and hence a population increase from woodchipping, everyone’s a winner come in spinner. That is the quality of FT Science. This thing is so convoluted, perverse & twisted only a fool would try and unwind it. The entire Island State of Tasmania is perpetually let down by those who seek to garner their filthy profits & maintain a ‘business as usual’ agenda. And by those who slavishly subscribe to the agenda, fearful of retribution or convinced what is good for their masters must be good for them, and has been since the British decided to empty their jails and dump the wretches, and their masters to rot on these windswept shores, far and away…
