This week Rosevears MLC Kerry Finch told the Australian Christian Lobby in its candidate questionnaire that he supports the freedom of non-government schools to select staff and students in accordance with the beliefs of the school.
Tasmania is currently the only State in Australia where religious schools are not given a general exemption on this issue.
Why then did he vote against an amendment to permit this only last year? (Reference Legislative Council Votes & Proceedings 21 August 2013).
And why is this vote mysteriously missing from his web-site, where he refers people interested in how he has voted?
When asked for his specific views on euthanasia, Mr Finch says he would “consider any legislative proposals” – and yet yesterday in the Examiner he gave his support.
He is similarly inconsistent on same-sex marriage.
Mr Finch is entitled to have these views, but surely he has to be open and frank when asked, and not tailor his remarks to suit his audience.
People value honesty and consistency in their political representatives.
You can’t say one thing to some people, and then directly the opposite to others.
