The Tasmanian Greens today paid their respects to former Tasmanian Senator, Brian Harradine.
Greens Leader Kim Booth MP said that Mr Harradine was a larger-than life Tasmanian whose long service representing the State would not be forgotten.
“While we may not always have agreed with Mr Harradine over a range of issues, we do acknowledge his tireless commitment in standing up for his beliefs and his dogged determination to defend Tasmania’s rights in Canberra,” Mr Booth said.
“Mr Harradine recognised the potential of balance of power parliaments, and he will be remembered for his wily negotiations which secured $350 million for Tasmania from the part sale of Telstra.”
“We also acknowledge Mr Harradine’s work to improve Aboriginal rights through the Wik native title negotiations with the Howard federal government.”
“Our deepest sympathies are extended to Mr Harradine’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Mr Booth said.
