A decent sawhorse …

Posted on

It’s the time of year when our thoughts turn to firewood and, finding myself with lots of limbwood to cut to length, I thought it was time I made a decent sawhorse.

We use wood for heating, cooking and our hot water in winter so it’s really valuable.

And, yes, that is a piece of wattle you see me cutting up.

Instant heat.

I went online, found hundreds of designs and chose this one.

It’s great. It’s easy to make (or can be purchased online) and holds logs securely at a reasonable height.

Lift one end up onto the crossbar, then lift the other and simply slide it under the spikes and let them grab it. I usually make sure the relevant spike is well engaged by tapping it with a hammer.

The one pictured is heavy duty because that’s what I had lying about but the commercially available ones are relatively lightweight and can be folded up and carried about quite easily.

It holds logs of all shapes and sizes and is much safer than holding them in place with one foot while working almost at ground level like some of us might have done in the past.
