Rise of the Eco-Warriors released in cinemas across Australia March 2014

15 young eco-warriors, 100 days in the jungles of Borneo – Can they make a difference?

Friday February 28, 2014Throughout the month of March acclaimed award winning Australian director, Cathy Henkel, and a group of passionate young people are choosing to challenge Australian audiences with the theatrical release of a new feature documentary the Rise of the Eco-Warriors, screening nationally across Australia.

Faced with the challenge of spending one hundred days in the jungles of Borneo, Rise of the Eco-Warriors tells the real life story of fifteen young people from nine countries who undertake the mission to explore and implement solutions to the rampant deforestation which is destroying local Dayak communities, driving endangered Orangutans and other wildlife to extinction and contributing to climate change.

Against all odds this dynamic group succeed in building an Orangutan rehabilitation centre, introduce a satellite monitoring system called Earthwatchers, start a reforestation nursery and build a global support network. Their efforts are put to the test when the bulldozers move in and threaten the future of a community living in a traditional longhouse.

“The film is designed to engage young people around the world about the dire environmental situation facing the forests of Borneo and the deforestation of its trees, the homes of Orangutans and other magnificent animals and species. Our purpose is to show that young people can a make a contribution and every action does make a difference,” said director Cathy Henkel.

Supporting the documentary, the filmmakers have implemented an education program to inspire other young people in Australia around the world. ThroughDeforestACTION they have engaged over 1,900 schools and 60,000 students in multiple countries about the issues facing Borneo and how people canand continue to do more work to highlight the situation.

“From the start a major focus of this project has been about developing an engaged audience in schools and encouraging teachers and students to promote the issues and take direct action within their social networks and communities. School children around Australia are learning about the ways to improve the environment and help stop deforestation of special places like Borneo,” said Henkel.

The film is being released nationally around Australia with special Q&A screenings with the Eco-Warriors and director, Cathy Henkel.
