Bob Brown: Liberals’ Lie to Voters on World Heritage Forests

Posted on

Photos by Bill Hatcher shows some of the Weld Valley forests that the Liberals want to remove from the World Heritage Area and open up for logging.

Bob Brown has released photographs of wild and scenic World Heritage forests in Tasmania which Prime Minister Abbott described last week as ‘logged’, ‘degraded’ or ‘plantations’.

Brown said, “Tasmanian World Heritage expert Geoff Law has an inventory of the 117 places Mr Abbott and the Liberals used in justification for rescinding 74 000 hectares of forests from World Heritage status. In fact 90 percent of the Liberal hit-list forests is unlogged, ecologically intact and rich in native flora and fauna.”

Brown used the analogy of the damage done by $70 million of preliminary dam works in the wild Franklin and Gordon valleys by the Liberals in 1983.

“They permitted the damage then used it to say therefore the whole lot should be destroyed.

“Here they are doing it again. Tasmanians who vote Liberal on Saturday are voting for global condemnation of the destruction of our world-recognised forest asset.”
