The Tasmanian Greens today announced their plan to build the Battery Point Boardwalk in Hobart.
Denison Greens’ MP, Cassy O’Connor, said the Greens would work hard to deliver the Boardwalk, pledging $23.3 million to facilitate the infrastructure and amenities development.
“This fantastic project is an investment in the health, wellbeing and vibrancy of our city,” Ms O’Connor said.
“The Boardwalk would link our stunning city and Salamanca, with Sandy Bay and UTAS, encouraging locals and visitors to walk, run or ride instead of taking their cars.”
“It will encourage more people to seek means of active transport like walking and cycling and will thereby reduce congestion on our roads and in car parks.”
“By 2020, it is expected that 50%of UTAS students would commute between the administrative hub of UTAS in Sandy Bay and the new accommodation being built and campuses in the CBD.”
“Linking Hobart’s creative and intellectual hubs will provide for a more vibrant CBD as students and staff will travel the Boardwalk between campuses, increasing the number of people moving about in, and engaging with, Hobart’s business activity and employment hotspots.”
“The project would generate a significant number of local construction jobs, with secondary benefits to the tourism, hospitality and design industries.”
“Final planning work has been completed by Council and a development application (DA) submitted. If the Hobart City Council DA is approved, the Battery Point project would be “shovel ready.”
“The Greens believe Australia’s most liveable city, and Hobart’s most beautiful shoreline would only be enhanced by the Battery Point Boardwalk. It’s an idea whose time has come and we’re determined to see it delivered,” Ms O’Connor said.
