Local Elly Hoyt who’s recently returned from New York and is gracing the stage
A long hot summer sets the stage for a cool jazz soirée and warm evenings bring smouldering soul as the Clarence Jazz Festival lights up from 16 – 23 January, 2014.
As part of its park program, Clarence Jazz is activating two new venues, with twilight concerts in the Rosny/Montagu Bay Coastal Reserve and Beltana Park in Lindisfarne.
The man with the (white) goods George Washingmachine returns to our Eastern Shores with fiddle and vocal chords primed to add some pepper to our local artists. George will emcee the concerts and bring the show home with his Clarence Jazz Allstars on Sunday, 23 February. So make sure you bring your delicates along for the Washingmachine special treatment.
When you pause to think of the jazz greats of Australia and turn your mind to male vocalists, one name emerges as the dominant force. Clarence Jazz is delighted to present the Vince Jones Quartet on 21 and 22 February at the Jazz Lounge in Rosny Barn and broadcast on Edge Radio on Sunday, 23 February. According to the Sydney Morning Heraldwhere others see distorting and embellishing a melody as proof that one is a jazz singer rather than just a singer, Jones is a lifetime beyond needing to prove anything.
“His melodic embellishments are the hallmark of a man with great ears for harmony, an instinct for musical logic and a love of those key watch-words of jazz: surprise and spontaneity.” – Sydney Morning Herald
The 2014Artists in Residence Program will present a four part program A History of Tasmanian Jazz on Edge Radio 99.3fm. The programs will also be played through installation works dotted throughout Clarence during the Festival. The broadcasts and artworks are a collaboration between Edge Radio, Tasmanian theatrical and museum identity Peter West, and Tasmanian Jazz artists. The programs will also be available to download from www.ccc.tas.gov.au/jazz
The recipient of the Clarence Jazz Festival Ian Pearce Scholarship for Piano, Eleanor Meredith will join the 2013 recipients of The Clarence Jazz Scholarship ProgramThomas Panckridge (trombone) and Ziah Cooper (violin) in a concert on the Bellerive Boardwalk on Friday 23 January.
Alderman Doug Chipman, the Mayor of Clarence said that the way that the Festival mentors up-coming jazz performers meant that the Festival could continuing to grow and evolve with the changing shape of Tasmanian jazz.
“It’s always a delight to offer opportunities for new emerging players and to enjoy the subtlety that our more experienced musicians have spent years developing,” Alderman Chipman said.
