Today the Australian Greens called on Tony Abbott to condemn the slaughter of dolphins when the Prime Minister meets his Japanese counterpart at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.

“Dolphins are protected in Australia and we are all disturbed by the gruesome footage of the dolphin slaughter and capture in Japan,” said Senator Whish-Wilson, spokesperson on whaling and fisheries.

“Tony Abbott is at the World Economic Forum with the Prime Minister of Japan and he should clearly express the concern of the Australian people over the slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

“The US and UK Ambassadors to Japan have already issued protests.

“Australia once led the world in the fight to end commercial whaling and it’s now time for us to push to end the slaughter of dolphins.

“Australia must push for the International Whaling Commission to add dolphins and porpoises to its conservation remit, including all cetaceans.

“Tony Abbott’s Coalition took a ‘Whale & Dolphin Protection Plan’ to the last election and he now needs to show those were more than just words on a website,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.
