Some Certainty for West Coast Tourism Operators
Greens Member for Braddon, Paul O’Halloran MP today welcomed confirmation of the reopening of the West Coast Wilderness Railway in January, following the announcement that tickets are now available on sale.
“The Greens welcome the announcement that this interim arrangement will breathe life back into this iconic attraction in time for the peak tourist season, finally providing the certainty that the tourism operators on the West Coast desperately need,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“Forward bookings for accommodation and other tourism businesses are highly dependent upon the infrastructure of key attractions being operational.”
“Confidence for tourists will translate into confidence for business operators when it comes to hiring staff for the upcoming summer, providing an all-round boost for the West Coast economy.”
“This positive announcement comes at a great time for the West Coast whose community which is still reeling from the mining tragedy two weeks ago.”
“To have a situation where the Railway is a viable commercial venture which stands independently of public subsidies is the Greens preferred position, but in the short term it is essential to provide assistance in this transition phase. What is still required is a long term vision which will guarantee the ongoing viability of the operation.”
“The subterfuge surrounding the deal with the Federal Group cannot recur, and the Greens want to see a transparent model, where new lease agreements are open to public scrutiny. This is one way where we can safeguard against repeating past mistakes.”
