No Country for New Profits?

Occasionally I feel sorry for Adrian Kelly (State President, The Real Estate Institute of Tasmania). No, that’s not true. There’s no sympathy here at all. His ongoing media appearances ensure that. Contradicting stats and market trends, while continuing to make knee-slapping predictions that always prove heart-breakingly wrong (for buyers). Those things make him the type of guy who always makes the top of your “ugh” list.

Over the past weekend an audible “ugh” could be heard from anyone who picked up The Sunday Examiner. Adrian was back predicting good times ahead for Tasmania. Has he learnt, you’re asking? Oh you mean hard evidence that might lend credibility to his claims? Oh no, he’s got a tub of KY and some hope. Hoping what is happening elsewhere will inevitably happen here. Unfortunately, these are the hopes the real estate industry has for Tasmanians. Another mainland inflicted boom and resulting debt misery. And further, just picture the saliva dripping from the state government’s mandibles as they hope for another stamp duty windfall to paper over their malfeasance …

Mainland speculators turning their attention south to Tasmania would be another horror story for housing affordability. However, it would be cheer-led by the lazy print media. Desperate for their real estate advertising sugar hit, so they stay alive another few years. Dunce senior journalists who still furiously masturbate over the wealth effect can keep sailing towards (too late) retirement without interruption. Real estate industry? Well, duh, they’d welcome Zombie Nazis if they were kicking tyres. And government – “where’s that stamp duty? We’ve already blown the budget.”

We wait to see where Sydney parks its cash next.
