James Squire Jack of Spades Porter

Camperdown, Sydney NSW | 5.0 per cent alcohol

Porter is probably best described as a slightly lighter-bodied version of stout.

It is a rich, dark beer highlighted by a deep red tinge and takes its name from the London baggage handlers who adopted it as their own.

James Squire Jack of Spades Porter is made by Chuck Hahn at his Malt Shovel Brewery in Sydney’s inner west.

It is dark, indeed almost black, and distinctly shows the trademark red tinge when held up to the light. It has a caramel-coloured, creamy head and the creaminess comes through in the aroma, too, along with coffee. The palate is creamy, too, and the coffee characters also make an appearance.

Against a stout James Squire Porter isn’t a huge beer, but it is richly flavoured and has a most satisfying texture. Try it with roast beef or perhaps a char-grilled steak.
