Six months later and residents of the Southern Beaches region are still waiting for a response from their council after more than 30 of them met with Councillors to discuss zoning concerns.
“We hoped that meeting with our council to discuss proposed zoning changes to the Copping Landfill Site would at minimum result in our concerns being formally acknowledged,” said local mum Eve Smith.
“But we haven’t had ANY response from them at all. I’m disgusted with the way we are being shunned by our own council.”
Representing this region is the Southern Beaches Conservation Society and its President Angela Marsh says.
“Unfortunately Sorell Council continues to refuse community consultation on an issue that affects all of its community members.”
“They continue to ride roughshod over locals whilst ignoring their own conflict of interest – that they own the land; that they are part-owners in the business that will operate on it and make financial gains from it; and all the while being the planning authority which grants final approval to developments on the site.”
“Make no mistake” said Angela, “Sorell Council are not going into state-wide waste management for philanthropic reasons.”
Members of the public have until 5pm on Monday 16th December to voice their concerns over an application to build a contaminated soil remediation facility at the Copping landfill.
