The Federal Government must move quickly to help provide certainty and sustainability for Qantas.
This is an iconic Australian company, powerful force in the economy and significant employer in my own electorate of Denison.
Qantas’ commercial disadvantage is that it’s effectively competing against government-backed airlines. This would be quickly and easily remedied by the Australian Government buying a stake in Qantas.
Any government financial interest in Qantas must be accompanied by a requirement for the airline to change its ways. One criterion should include an end to the offshoring of maintenance and crews, as well as the preservation of the workforce in regional centres such as the call centre in Glenorchy City near Hobart.
